The Greens will seek to take up Senate seats in several marginal states in a bid to reduce the Coalition's majority and get a better handle on Australia's future economic future.

Greens spokesman for Environment Tim Nicholls says he will not run for Senate

The Greens want to take up eight seat and potentially hold another if their proposal to change the Commonwealth Electoral Act is rejected.

The change would force the major parties to get to the voting booths more often, giving Greens candidates a better chance of making gains.

A government spokesman said its main priority was to deliver jobs, deliver investment, tackle climate change and provide better education outcomes.

"We have seen a change in the political paradigm where the parties have been more focused on electoral advantage rather than doing all the things that could deliver the kind of jobs, investment and outcomes that are going to pay for themselves in the decades to come," the spokesman said.

"We have also come across a political world that has become completely detached from the concerns and needs of the Australian people.

"They are now thinking more about who will pay for a lot of the big decisions, and in this environment of disinterest and a kind of non-interference in the political process and all sorts of political and economic problems, there needs to be a real shift."

Senator Nicholls is the Greens' candidate in Queensland.

He has come out strongly in favour of the Greens' push for new laws to deal with climate change and the party's anti-mining strategy.

The Greens leader, Richard Di Natale, said the party was "very much in favour" of the move.

He said the legislation is "a big first step" but "needs to be further developed".

He added the Coalition's current position on the issue was "worse than the worst of the worst times" with the Coalition already imposing a moratorium on new mining.

The Greens would be seeking to pass a bill similar to a proposal passed this week by the Labor Party.
